Nincs szükséged se a Tanítás Nagy Kocsijára, se a Tanítás Kis Kocsijára, se a négyes alaptételre, se a tizenkettes szabályra, se a tíz belátásra, se a száz tagadásra, se a többi marhaságra. Hagyd a fenébe az egészet!
- Na és milyen gyakorlatokat végzel olyankor?
- Amikor éhes vagyok, eszem, amikor álmos vagyok, alszom - vágta rá az ifjú.
- Ne beszélj! Ez a te buddhizmusod?
- Ez az én buddhizmusom.
- Na és mindenki buddhista, aki ezt teszi?
- Nem mindenki.
- Miért nem?
- Mert amikor ők esznek, nem esznek, hanem különféle más dolgokra gondolnak, és amikor alszanak, nem alszanak, hanem különféle dolgokról álmodnak. Ezért nem olyanok, mint én. Én tudom, hogyan kell enni, hogyan kell aludni.
Lin-csi apát kolostorába egy nap ifjú szerzetesjelölt érkezett.
- Hogy hívnak? - kérdezte tőle az apát.
- A nevem Taj-lung - felelte az ifjú. - Buddha és a pátriárkák tanításáért jöttem. Egy kissé ismerem már a Magasztos és a mesterek tanítását, de tanácsokat még szívesen fogadok - tette hozzá határozottan. Lin-csi szeme elkerekedett, nem látott még ilyen szemtelen jelöltet. Elhatározta, hogy kifaggatja.
- Mondd, szoktál azon fáradozni, hogy rátalálj a helyes útra? - kérdezte.
- Szoktam.
- Az elme tehát egyáltalán nem tökéletes, hiszen leginkább önmaga megsegítésén fáradozik. Az elme ezenkívül önző és akarnok. Tudása öncélú és haszontalan. Érdemes hívek! Az egyetlen tökéletes dolog tehát a világon: a nemtudásotok. Bármit tesztek, tehetnétek jobban is. Bármit tudtok, tudhatnátok jobban is. Amit viszont nem tudtok, azt hibátlanul nem tudjátok. Vagyis tökéletes a nemtudásotok! De azért el ne bízzátok magatokat, tanítványok! A nemtudásban különbet, mint ti vagytok, akárhol találok! - figyelmeztette végül szerzeteseit Lin-csi apát, kolostorában, a Huo-to folyó partján.
A csarnokban ismét nagy csend honolt, majd megszólalt egy öreg szerzetes.
- Az elme azért teremt gépet, mert gépek nélkül már nem boldogul. Azért gyújt fényt a világban, hogy ő maga ne tévelyegjen vakon, és azért teremt művészetet, hogy gyönyörködjék teremtő képességében, vagyis önmagában - szólt az öreg, mire Lin-csi így fejezte be a beszélgetést.
- Az emberi elme tehát maga a tökély - foglalta össze Lin-csi mester, aztán egy újabb kérdéssel folytatta a beszélgetést. - Na és tudjátok-e, szerzetesek, hogy ez a tökéletes emberi elme mire való?
- Az elme teremtő - vágta rá a választ a legtudósabb szerzetes. - Az elme teremti a gépet, mely a föld mélyéből kiemeli a vizet, mely megforgatja a szántóföldet. Az elme teremt tudós gondolatokat, melyek világosságot gyújtanak a világban, s teremti a művészetet, mely szebb, mint a valóság.
- Jól mondtad, szerzetes! - dicsérte meg az eminenst azonnal Lin-csi, s tovább kérdezett. - És azt vajon tudjátok-e, hívek, hogy mindezt miért teszi az elme?

- És tökéletes minden elme, mely a Tanítást felfogja - szólalt meg a harmadik, s magyarázatul hozzátette. - Merthogy a Tanítás által minden elme tökéletessé, vagyis buddha-elmévé válhat.
- Úgy van! Úgy van! - helyeseltek kórusban a szerzetesek, hogy jelezzék, ők is buddha-jelöltek.
